Do You Need an App, a Website, or Something in Between?

Not every business needs a mobile app. Not every business can get away with just a website. Here's how to think through the decision.

"We need an app." It's one of the most common requests from business owners, and one of the most frequently misunderstood. An app isn't automatically better than a website. It's a different tool for a different job. Building one when you don't need it wastes money. Skipping one when you do leaves customers frustrated.

What a website does best

Websites are for discovery, information, and conversion. Someone hears about you, searches your name, lands on your site, learns what you do, and takes action: fills a form, makes a call, buys a product. Websites are open to everyone with a browser. They don't require a download. They're easy to update. For most businesses, a great website is the foundation everything else sits on.

What an app does best

Apps shine when users need to come back frequently and do specific tasks quickly: order food, track a delivery, manage a membership, book appointments, access account details offline. Apps live on the home screen. They can send push notifications. They can use device features like cameras, GPS, and biometrics. But they require a download, a significant barrier most users won't cross for a one-time interaction.

KEY INSIGHT

Ask yourself: will your customers use this more than once a week? If not, they probably won't install an app, but they will visit a website.

The middle ground: progressive web apps

Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) blur the line. They're websites that can be "installed" on a phone, work offline, and send notifications, without going through an app store. For many businesses, a well-built PWA delivers 80% of what an app offers at a fraction of the cost. It's worth asking whether you need a native app at all, or whether a smarter website would serve your customers better.

Questions to ask before building an app

  • Do customers need to interact with us daily or weekly?
  • Do we need features only a phone can provide (camera, GPS, offline access)?
  • Will customers download an app for a business they use occasionally?
  • Can a well-designed mobile website do the same job?
  • Do we have the budget to maintain an app on both iOS and Android long-term?
  • Is our website already excellent on mobile?

Build the foundation first

If your website is slow, confusing, or doesn't work on phones, an app won't fix your problems. It'll multiply them. Nail the web experience first. Understand your customers' actual behaviour. Then, if the data shows people need a dedicated app experience, you'll be building on solid ground with clear requirements.

PRACTICAL TIP

Check your website analytics. What percentage of visitors are on mobile? What do they do? That data tells you more than any brainstorming session.
